Rockingham in the wind and rain

8th September 2014

Last night was wild with wind gusts up to 45km/hr and lots of heavy showers.  We didn't get a lot of sleep, however the van was watertight.  This camp site in Pinjarra is very ordinary, but we do have our own dunny outside the door!

Determined to do something despite the appalling weather which continued the same all day, we drove into Rockingham.  The intention was to visit a wildlife environment centre where some of the exhibits are under cover, however it is closed on Monday's - very frustrating.  I also wanted to take a boat trip to penguin island where close encounters with fairy penguins are possible.  John was concerned the boat trip, although very short, would be too rough so we didn't do that either.

We did drive onto Point Peron and climbed to a lookout jutting over the ocean.  There the full force of the blasting winds from the north off the Indian Ocean made it difficult to stand!  See photo's.

The weather is so wild  we have decided to drive south tomorrow to the Margaret River region in the hope of finding some better weather.  We were going to camp in Wellington NP but have decided to give it a miss as it would be miserable among the trees in the damp.  The long range forecast is not good so we may give up on the southeast corner of WA altogether and drive to the Eyre Peninsula in SA instead.  The next few days will be the decider.
